DIY Activated Charcoal Face Mask

Whenever my skin starts to feel super dull or in need of a necessary pick-me-up, I love to try out various activated charcoal face masks. Activated charcoal is great way to cleanse the skin of impurities and detox it from the dirt, oil and grime that accumulates from our day-to-day lives. It’s also the perfect excuse to grab a glass of wine and veg out in my comfy robe. Here is one of my favorite face masks to get my skin back on it’s A game:

  • 1 tbsp bentonite clay

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tsp activated charcoal powder

  • 1-2 drops of the essential oil of your choice (lavender, peppermint, or tea tree oil)

How to:

- In a bowl, mix together clay, activated charcoal powder, apple cider vinegar, and essential  oil. Stir together until smooth.

- Apply mask to clean face and let sit for 10 minutes.

- Rinse off mask with warm water and washcloth.

Why these ingredients?

Bentonite clay: Bentonite clay is a great and inexpensive way to unclog and shrink pores. It is also loaded with minerals that are great for softening the skin, exfoliating, and giving your face that extra glow.

Activated charcoal: Activated charcoal is not only great in juices and lattes, like Juice Society’s Activated Lemonade and Activated Latte, for an internal detox, but also makes a great addition to any facemask. Activated charcoal helps draw out bacteria, chemicals, dirt, and oil that is trapped underneath our skin. It works wonders for treating those pesky breakouts and blackheads that we are constantly trying to get rid of.

Apple cider vinegar: Apple cider vinegar has been used in face masks for decades to fight against blemishes and wrinkles. It helps remove excess oils and balance the pH of our skin.

Essential oils: Essential oils are one of the best ways to naturally smooth and tone oily or dry skin. Lavender and peppermint are also scents used in aromatherapy, so using a couple drops in you facemask can make for a relaxing and calming at-home spa session.

Don’t have time for an at-home mask? That’s ok, Origins, Boscia, and Clinique all have great charcoal face masks that we love. So sit back, relax, and treat yo’self.
